Disadvantages of job rotation

A disadvantage for the employer is that training employees in many different areas is time-consuming and therefore expensive. Some employees feel stressed and overwhelmed by a constantly changing environment and demands. Integration problems can also occur more frequently. Some employees also find it difficult to hand over control and power claims to colleagues. Job rotation can therefore lead to frequent changes and pressure in the workforce. Job rotation is not suitable for highly specialized work processes. For difficult tasks for which employees with different professional backgrounds and detailed knowledge are responsible, exchanging employees is inappropriate. Legal framework conditions must not be ignored either. Employees may only be used for those areas of activity for which they are trained. A lawyer's secretary, for example, may not negotiate in court.

Job Enlargement as a horizontal and quantitative expansion of tasks

Job enlargement is about structuring work on a horizontal level. Job enlargement occurs, for example, when a sales representative in the field takes over another district. Just like with job rotation, frequent job changes reduce one-sided physical strain on employees because they adopt different body positions and perform more diverse movements. This allows for physical recovery phases and reduces the rate of sickness. Boredom and monotony are also prevented by varied work. Employees identify more strongly with their work because they are better involved in the processes of its creation and have a better overview. The increased diversity of employees makes it easier to fill gaps in the event of a staff shortage.
