The Camden Rams started their defense of their IDRU Premiership title with a shaky but in the end convincing 38 – 0 win over Shamrocks at Camden on Saturday. After a dour first half in which no points were scored, Camden came out in the second half and lifted the tempo running in 6 tries to nil to take the match.
The second half was marred by a nasty brawl which erupted after two players exchanged head butts, followed by a flurry of punches as almost every player on the field became involved. Outstanding young Referee James Penman continued to show maturity beyond his years as he restored control. After carefully discussing the incident with his Touch Judges, he produced Red Cards for Camden center Lee Russell and his Shamrocks counterpart Aaron Warren. Both players are expected to face Head Butting charges.
The Rams second half effort running with the strong wind phone number library was in stark contrast to the first half when they never looked like scoring as Shamrocks dominated possession and field position. Skipper Gavin Holder was once again a standout for Camden, scoring two tries himself and having a hand in two other tries. The tries came at regular intervals as the Rams sent out a warning that they are ready to defend their title.
The second half was 4 minutes old when Junior Mapesone finished off good lead up work from Holder and Halfback Josh Holman after a scrum to score in the corner. Five minutes later Holder scored himself when he swooped on a loose ball to score under the posts. With Lee Russell’s conversion Camden were out 12 – 0. Camden prop Matt Blunden then found himself in the Bin for 10 after a high tackle. Minutes later Matt Tedesco crossed for the first of his 3 tries, converted by Russell the Rams lead was out to 19 – 0. After the brawl at the 64 minute mark it was all Camden through to the final whistle. Tedesco got his second before Holder finished off a strong Rams forward drive to score number two. The conversion from Fullback Jake Sadler took the score to 31 – 0. Sadler then combined with Holder as the big No.8 broke from a scrum deep in the Rams half. Holder sent Sadler on a long run down the left touch line as Tedesco loomed up in support to take the inside pass from Sadler to score. Sadler’s conversion from out wide brought up the final score of 38 – 0.
The first half aside the Rams certainly showed the small crowd that they are ready to defend their hard earned Premiership title against a plucky but outgunned Shamrocks unit. Best for Shamrocks were workhorse hooker Anthony Allport and the ever reliable Tristram Storm who was outstanding for Shamrocks at Fly Half.
